Training & Resources

Training

Diver training is a vital part of the Scientific Diving Program’s (SDP) mission, and the SDP offers AAUS Scientific Diver training, required diver safety courses (CPR, FA, Emergency O2), various specialty courses, and project-specific training.

  • For information on the annual OSU AAUS Scientific Diver course, visit the Becoming a Scientific Diver page.
  • For information on upcoming safety (CPR, FA, EO2) and specialty courses (Fill Station Operator, Drysuit, Nitrox, etc.), contact the SDP directly.

Project-specific training needs will be identified during the dive planning process and facilitated on an as-needed basis (e.g., specific tool or equipment use, animal capture/handling, deep or technical diving, etc.).

Resources

The SDP offers a variety of resources and tools for current status OSU Scientific Divers, free of charge, such as the OSU scientific diver email list-serve, proficiency dive opportunities, and dive equipment access.

SDP Diver Email List

Dive opportunities, course offerings, job and internship announcements, etc. are examples of regular postings to the SDP diver email list. To be added to this list, please contact the SDP.

Proficiency Dives

Upcoming dive opportunities at Langton Pool and open water locations are announced on the SDP diver email list. The SDP will typically make equipment and transportation available for these events at zero or minimal cost.

Equipment check-out and rentals

The SDP has a limited selection of gear (BCDs, regulators, tanks, computers) and basic research equipment (lift bags, measuring tapes, underwater slates, etc.) available for scientific divers to use free of charge for research or proficiency dives. Gear is only issued to active status scientific divers who demonstrate a need to dive for research or proficiency purposes. For more information on how to check out dive gear please contact the SDP.

The OSU PAC Scuba Program rents dive and exposure equipment and sells air fills to current OSU employees and students with active OSU ID numbers. Visit the  OSU Academic and Recreational Dive Center website for more details.
