Facility Overview

The Marine Operations Facility, located in Newport, Oregon, is the home port and shore-based support facility for Oregon State University’s research vessels. The facility is located on the south side of Yaquina Bay and is adjacent to the Hatfield Marine Science Center, and it includes:

  • A 323 ft. dock
  • A small craft 80 ft. floating dock
  • Three buildings
  • A locked storage yard

Buildings at the facility consist of the Marine Operations Building (Bldg# 912) which includes offices and a small conference room upstairs, a temperature-controlled workspace and science staging area on the main floor. The adjacent Shoreside Support Building (Bldg# 901) houses the shipping and receiving area and general storage. The Pier Building (Bldg# 915) includes a staging area, a shop facility, and a small office. There is a fenced storage yard adjacent to the Marine Operations and Shoreside Support Buildings which is locked outside of normal working hours.

Depths along the northern face of the Pier were last sounded in May 2011 and were 20’ MLLW or deeper. A High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) camel is provided along the entire face of the wharf. Depths range from 15 to 20 feet along the face.

The Marine Operations facility also provides support for research vessels operated by other institutions within the US Academic Research Fleet, state or federal agencies, and other sponsored programs with port calls in Newport, Oregon.

Pier Use

"In-water" tests of scientific equipment can be conducted off the wharf. A crane or one of the forklifts may be available to put equipment in the water. Vessel and equipment moorage on the Small Craft Floating dock is permissible as space allows. Advance notice and approval through Marine Operations is required. Projects and small craft or equipment moorage requiring pier use can submit requests by completing the Pier Use form.
