Marine Technician Group

About

The OSU Marine Technician Group works closely with scientists and ship crews to facilitate safe, successful, and inclusive sea-going research. Our team supports science on OSU’s vessels, US Coast Guard Cutter Healy, and the US Academic Research Fleet. We provide a variety of services, including shipboard support for scientific instrumentation and equipment, cruise planning and field logistics, small vessel support, minor fabrication, and assistance with user-supplied sensors on a case-by-case basis.

STARC

STARC (Ship-based science Technical support in the ARCtic) is a collaborative NSF-funded program between the United States Coast Guard, Oregon State University, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and University of Washington. Marine Technicians from each institution sail aboard US Coast Guard Cutter Healy, the nation’s largest icebreaker. We maintain the suite of acoustic and water quality instruments, and work closely with the science party and Coast Guard personnel to support oceanographic research in the Arctic.

Facilities

At our Corvallis and Newport locations, our workshops support machining and fabrication, science instrumentation repair, expedition staging, and short-term storage. Our Corvallis location houses our Cruise and Expedition Staging facility. In Newport, our location in the 901 Building at the Marine Operations Facility includes our machining and electronics workshops, and indoor short-term storage space for scientific instrumentation.

RVTEC

The OSU Marine Technician Group represents the institutional participation in the University-National Oceanographic Laboratory System Research Vessel Technical Enhancement Committee (UNOLS RVTEC). The RVTEC promotes and enhances the technical support that enables scientific productivity in sea-going research programs aboard oceanographic platforms.
